Black Stars head coach CK Akonnor has explained why Southampton’s new signee Mohammed Salisu was excluded from his 23-man squad for next month’s friendly game against Mali.

The Black Stars head coach on Friday announced his 23-man squad for October 9’s friendly against neighbors Mali in Antalya, Turkey.

C.K Akonnor handed debut call ups to Strasbourg’s Alexander Djiku, Azam’s Yakubu Mohammed, MSK Zilina’s Benson Anang, Amiens’ Emmanuel Lomotey and Nordsjaelland’s Kamal Deen.

Pyramid FC’s John Antwi was also handed a call up by the Ghana Coach, with one of the surprise exclusions being Southampton’s new signee Mohammed Salisu.

However, CK Akonnor has explained the reason why he excluded Mohammed Salisu.

“He is not in the team because I heard his coach spoke about him in terms of fitness level. They are looking at October after the national games, before he will be back. Based on that, I want to give him a chance to rest and get fit and start a game in Southampton and then we will look forward to get him on board,” CK told Ghana FA Tv.

October’s game against Mali will be CK Akonnor’s first game since he took over from Kwesi Appiah in February and will also be a warm-up for the 2022 African Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sudan in November.
