Where does Kudus rank amongst Ghana’s most expensive transfers?

Kudus Mohammed on Thursday joined Erik ten Hag’s fold from Danish outfit Nordsjaelland on a five-year deal reportedly worth €9 million.

He became the 7th Ghanaian to join Ajax after Kofi Mensah (1996-1999), Abubakari Yakubu (1999-2005), Kwame Gershion Quansah (2000-2004), Anthony Obodai (2001-2005), Emmanuel Boakye (2005-2007) and Sammy Kuffour (2008).

The €9m transfer fee also made him the most expensive teenager in Ghana’s history, but where does he rank in Ghana most expensive transfers?

1. Michael Essien (£24.4m) – Lyon to Chelsea

West Ham in August 2016 broke their transfer record to sign André Ayew from Swansea City for a fee reported to be £20.5m. Ayew signed a three-year contract with the option of another 2 years.

4. Asamoah Gyan (£13m) – Stade Rennes to Sunderland

After a decent performance at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Asamoah Gyan signed for Sunderland from Stade Rennes for a fee of £13 million. The Ghanaian international then became the club’s most expensive signing.

Sulley Muntari after helping Portsmouth and Harry Redknapp win the FA Cup in 2008 joined José Mourinho at San Siro. Portsmouth in July 2008 confirmed the sale of the Ghanaian midfielder to Inter Milan for a fee of £11 million. Muntari went on to win the treble with Inter in 2010.

7. Emmanuel Boateng (€11m) – Levante to Dalian Yifang

After scoring a memorable hat trick in May 2018 to end Barcelona’s unbeaten run in the 2017/2018 La Liga season, Spanish side Levante in January 2019 announced the sale of Emmanuel Boateng to Chinese Club Dalian Yifang for a transfer fee of €11 million.

8. Kevin-Prince Boateng (€10m) – AC Milan to Schalke 04

Schalke 04 secured the services of Boateng in 2013

Kevin Prince Boateng in the summer of 2013 joined Schalke 04 from Ac Milan. The Bundesliga side paid €10 million for the services of Boateng, he signed a four-year contract due to expire in June 2017.

In May 2015, Boateng was suspended indefinitely from the club in the aftermath of a defeat against Fc Köln s a result of poor behaviour which claimed to have led to the club’s poor domestic performances. His contract with Schalke was terminated on 8 December 2015.

8. Bernard Mensah (€10m) – Vitoria Guimaraes to Atlético Madrid

Kudus Mohammed’s move to Ajax Amsterdam on Thursday made him Ghana’s most expensive teenager and 10th most expensive signing in history. The burgeon midfielder joined the Erevidise side on a five-year contract worth 9 million euros.
