Former Ghana goalkeeper Michael Owusu Mensah has opened up on how he made erstwhile Libyan President Mummar Gaddafi shed tears.

Ghana in 1982 defied all odds to defeat host nation Libya in the final of the 1982 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) final in-front of their boisterous and intimidating crowd.

The game after 90 minutes and extra time ended 1-1, Ghana defeated the Libyans 7-6 on penalties. Michael Owusu who was the hero on the day had missed his kick, he went on to save 2 spot kicks and hand Ghana it Fourth AFCON trophy.

“I saved four penalties in the 1982 Nations Cup which made Gaddafi shed tears,” Mensah revealed from his base in the United States of America. 

Michael Owusu, who ironically was Ghana’s 4th choice goalkeeper prior to the tournament went on to express his disappointment over the Government’s inability to fulfill the promises it made to the players before the tournament.

Ghana since 1982 hasn’t tasted glory in any tournament.
