The Ghanaian midfielder has this season been indisputable in Diego Simeone’s team. He has so far featured in every single game this season other than three in which he was either suspended or injured. He has in the process scored 3 times and provided an assist.
Thomas Partey has slotted in perfectly for Rodri who departed to Manchester City in the summer. He has managed to make the Atlético midfield his own and also convince Diego Simeone that there’s no party like a Partey party.
Partey’s breathtaking performances this season has pushed him up high on the list of the best Defensive midfielders in the world. 90Min in March rated him as the 8th best defensive midfielder in the world. Ahead of former club competitor Rodri and fellow African defensive midfielders Wilfred Ndidi and Idrissa Gueye.
Partey’s awe-inspiring performances has also been made him a priority for most European clubs ahead of the summer transfer market. The Ghanaian international is on the list of Arsenal, Manchester United, Roma and Inter Milan.
The 26 year old has a contract that ends in 2023. He also has a €50million (£43.5m) release clause in his contract, one which appeals to a lot of suitors.
Verily verily, paying €50million (£43.5m) for Partey in an inflated transfer market is a big bargain. A bargain Atlético Madrid won’t want to see happen as they’ve already started talks to extend his contract, one which will double his release clause €100m (£87m).
It is believed that the midfielder’s first option is to stay at Atlético Madrid. In an interview recently, Partey said “my agent is talking to the club. Sometimes we know that we can’t always have what we want, but I hope that everything turns out well”.
In the same interview that looks Partey has poked holes into the hopes of suitors, he went on to lift their hopes “Retire here? It’s something you always think about as a kid but when you get older you know that things change and that anything can happen”.
With all these rumors surrounding Partey’s future, it’ll be interesting to see what happens in the coming days and in the summer.
