Both teams came into the game with different objectives. Senegal were hoping to be lucky this time round after losing in the final in 2002 and 2019, whiles Egypt who are seven times winners of the competition (1957, 1959, 1986, 1998, 2006, 2008 and 2010) were hoping for a eighth star on their jersey.
Just four minutes into the game, Senegal were presented the chance to take the lead from a spot-kick after Saliou Ciss was fouled in the box. Sadio Mane stepped up and took the kick only to see his effort saved by Gabaski.
Mohammed Salah came close to breaking the deadlock in the 43rd minute, he danced his way through the Cameroon defense and fired a shot to the top right corner but Edouard Mendy pulled off a good save to deny him.
The second half of the game was cagey and saw little chances, the best chances of the half fell to Ahmed Hamdy and Abdelmonem who got on the end of dangerous crosses but failed to direct their efforts on target.
The game at the end of 90 minutes went into extra-time. The 30 minutes of the extra-time was pulsating, with both team coming close to scoring at least once. Bamba Dieng was denied on three occasions by Gabaski, whiles Zico forced Mendy into making a good save from a ferocious effort.
The game went into penalties and in a twist of fate, Sadio Mane scored the winning penalty to earn his side a 4-2 victory and their first ever AFCON trophy.
