Tamale City defeated Liberty Professionals 1-0 in the playoff to determine the replacement of demoted AshantiGold in the betPawa Ghana Premier League.
Liberty Professionals won their first game of the three way playoff against Ebusua Dwarfs 3-1 and came into this game hoping to get a positive result which would secure promotion.
However, those hopes came crushing in the 42nd minute when they found themselves a goal down. Isaac Mensah gave Tamale City the lead after he lobed the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper.
Liberty Professionals came into the second half with added impetus and mounted pressure on Tamale City but the Tamale City defense led by Mubarak Abdul Kadiri stayed resilient to keep them at bay.
In the 77th minute, Liberty Professionals were rewarded a spot kick after Kingsley Braye brought down his opponent in the box, William Odoru took the penalty kick but only saw his effort go wide.
Tamale City thought they had wrapped the game up in the 87th minute when Nana Osei curled a beautiful shot pass the goalkeeper, but his celebrations were cut short by the offside flag.
Liberty probed in the remaining minutes of the game but Tamale City stayed resolute to win 1-0 and take themselves a point away of securing promotion.
The final game of the playoff will see Tamale City take on Ebusua Dwarfs on Monday, August 8.
