Head Coach of the Black Stars Otto Addo has explained why he left Genk forward Joseph Painstil out of the squad for the friendly games against Brazil and Nicaragua.
The 24-year old who has been in fine form for his club in Belgium was surprisingly left out of the squad for the friendly games which forms part of Ghana’s preparation for the 2022 World Cup, a decision which has sternly been criticized.
Explaining the decision, Otto revealed that he hasn’t seen more of Joseph Painstil and adds that he made the decision because he sees others are ahead of him currently.
“Joseph [Painstil] is doing very well. It would have been good for him to play the Japan and Chile games to show more of himself but he had problems and decided to leave the team,” he noted.
“Also, he wanted to start with his team [Genk], this one I can I understand. Surely I can just judge what I see.
“At the moment, I see others ahead of him but I think Joseph is a good player. He’s not with the squad now, it doesn’t mean everything is gone. Anything can still happen, we are monitoring all the players, their performances so the gate is not closed.”
Joseph Painstil has scored 4 goals and provided an assist in 7 starts for Genk this season, a feat which has earned him a new contract at the club.
Ghana will play Brazil on Friday, September 23 in Le Harve – France and Nicaragua on Tuesday, September 27 in Lorca – Spain.
