Misery for 4 Ghanaians, merry for 3 others in the second qualifying round of the 2020/21 Uefa Champions league

Games are coming in thick and fast as we gear towards the group stages of the 2020/21 Uefa Champions league.

The second qualifying round for the group stage took place on Tuesday, 25 August and Wednesday, 26 August, with 13 games taking place across the various match centers.

7 Ghanaian players were involved, with 3 of them enjoying success with their respective clubs.

1. Bernard Mensah (Besiktas)

It was a debut to forget for Bernard Mensah as Besiktas lost 3-1 to Greek outfit PAOK. Christos Tzolis scored twice for PAOK, with Dimitris Pelkas scoring the other goal. Cyle Larin scored the face saving goal for Besiktas.

Bernard Mensah lasted 70 minutes on the field.

2. Winful Cobinnah (KF Tirana)

KF Tirana lost 1-0 to Serbian Champions Red Star Belgrade, Tomane scored the goal to end coach Ndubuisi Egbo and Winful Cobinnah’s UEFA Champions league dreams.

Winful Cobinnah was replaced by Jurgen Vrapi in the 73rd minute.

3. Richmond Boakye-Yiadom (Red Star Belgrade)

Richmond Boakye-Yiadom enjoyed success with Red Star Belgrade. The Serbian champions defeated Albanian champions KF Tirana 1-0, courtesy Tomane’s second half goal.

Richmond Boakye-Yiadom watched the entire game from the bench.

4. Kwabena Owusu (Qarabag)

Kwabena Owusu’s Qarabag defeated Sheriff Tiraspol 2-1 to advance to the third round of the UEFA Champions league qualifiers. Uros Matic and Mahir Emreli scored the goals for Qarabag, whiles Frank Castaneda scored the consolation goal for Sheriff Tiraspol.

Kwabena Owusu made a brief appearance.

5. Richard Gadze (Sheriff Tiraspol)

Sheriff Tiraspol lost 2-1 to Azerbaijan champions Qarabag. Uros Matic and Mahir Emreli grabbed the goals for Qarabag, whiles Frank Castaneda scored the consolation goal for Sheriff Tiraspol.

Richard Gadze came on in the 73rd minute.

6. Bernard Tekpetey (Ludogorets)

A 78th minute strike from Junior Brumado handed FC Midtjylland a 1-0 victory against Bulgarian champions Ludogorets.

Bernard Tekpetey came on in the 55th minute. Elvis Manu didn’t make the match day squad for Ludogorets.

7. Ernest Asante (Omonia Nicosia)

After a scoreless first 90 minutes. Omonia Nicosia scored twice in Extra-time to defeat Legia Warszawa 2-0. Former Wigan striker Jordi Gomez and Thiago scored the goals for Omonia.

Ernest Asante came on in the second half to mark his debut. He provided the assist for the second goal.
