Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has explained why he didn’t start new signee Thomas Partey against Manchester City.

Thomas Partey, who joined Arsenal on transfer deadline day but only arrived in London on Tuesday following international duty was expected to start against Manchester City on Saturday evening.

However, the Ghanaian international was named on the bench and came on with less than 10 minutes to go.

Manager Mikel Arteta has explained the decision, saying Partey will need time to adjust to his new surroundings.

“Yes, we will see how quickly we can make it with him,” said Arteta after the 1-0 defeat to Manchester City.

“I think we have to respect that process and that timing for him because he only trained for a day really and there’s a lot of new information and different game models for him to understand, and we have to respect that.

“But I think when he came on he looked good.”

Thomas Partey is expected to start on Thursday when Arsenal face Rapid Vienna in the Europa league.
