Former Black Stars midfielder Laryea Kingston has revealed how he had to use an unconventional style of injury management in order to play at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations.
The former Hearts of Oak midfielder was one of Ghana’s best performers at the AFCON in 2008. Laryea in the course of the tournament picked up an injury, but he was determined and willing to give his all in bid to see Ghana’s host and win dream come to reality.
Laryea was instrumental in the Quaterfinal as Ghana’s 10 men picked up an impressive 2-1 victory against rivals Nigeria. The game was his last apperance for Ghana at the tourney.
Speaking in an interview with Joy sports, the midfielder disclosed how he had to use an unconventional style of injury management in order to play some of the games .
“During that tournament, I had an injury when I broke a bone. I got injured during the tournament and that’s why I miss the sem-final. So at that time, I had to put raw meat on my on foot and put on my socks before wearing my boot. So when I played against Nigeria, I was injured. We used to have a physio at Hearts who thought me that”, he said.
Laryea’s unavailability proved costly as Ghana lost 1-0 to Cameroon in the semifinal. Ghana defeated rivals Ivory Coast 4-2 to secure 3rd place.
