Senegal goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy believes Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed Qotb Abou Gabal Ali, also known as Gabaski was the best goalkeeper at the just ended Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Mendy, who was in post for Senegal as they stroll to win their first ever AFCON trophy after beating Egypt on penalty shootouts in the final on Sunday was named goalkeeper of the tournament.
However, a myriad of football followers including Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan who was working as a pundit for Super Sports during the AFCON believe the award should have gone to Gabaski and Mendy who was the winner of the award has similar opinion.
“Gabaski is the best goalkeeper of the tournament, honestly. I spoke to him and I told him he deserves it [to win goalkeeper of the tournament]. And I was really impressed by his tournament,” Mendy told Egyptian TV station MBC after the final.
Gabaski, who plies his trade for Zamalek in Egypt enjoyed a remarkable campaign. He had his first chance to be in goal in the Round of 16 victory against Ivory Coast after Mohammed El-Shenawy picked up an injury.
The 33-year old didn’t turn his back from then, going on to become the hero for his team in the penalty shootouts against Ivovry Coast and Cameroon.
In the final, Gabaski saved Sadio Mane’s 7th minute and also went on to make 7 others saves, a feat which earned him the man of the match award.
Gabaski finished the tournament without conceding a goal. He made (3.8) saves per game, a record bettered by Sierra Leone’s Mohamed Kamara (5.7).
