Hearts of Oak legend, Bernard Don Bortey has revealed that former chairman of Asante Kotoko Herbert Mensah wanted him jailed for 10 years because of his inability to sign him for Kotoko.

Over the years, Don Bortey has constantly been accused by fans of Asante Kotoko for accepting a transfer money from the club but never played for the team.

Don Bortey after returning from a trial in China came to Ghana to sign for Hearts of Oak, but issues with his contract complicated the move which resulted in a hijack from Asante Kotoko. The move to Kotoko collapsed at the eleventh hour.

There were reports that Don Bortey had taken money from the Porcupine Warriors.

Revisiting the issue on GTV Sports+ on Sunday, Don Bortey refuted the claims, he went on to describe how things unfolded.

“The money Kotoko gave to me wasn’t my signing on fee, Herbert said he was taking me to Kumasi so he gave me a car which is the Opel, 500gh and a mobile phone which I used in Kumasi, he also sorted my family out with some funds.”

“By then I was a small boy, so I left the money with my family. So later when I came back, the officials of Hearts of Oak asked of the where about of the money Kotoko officials gave to me and I told them I haven’t spent it,” Don Bortey said.

Don Bortey revealed that he refunded the 500gh to Asante Kotoko, but despite doing that. Kotoko arranged the matter before court and then Chairman of the club Herbert Mensah wanted him jailed for 10 years.

“They (Kotoko) reported me to Osu Police Station, so when we went there I informed the inspector that I haven’t spent the money. We proceeded to court at Osu where I informed the chamber that I had refunded their money and items back to them.”

“Herbert was asked why he wanted me to be arrested, he explained that his inability to get me to play for Kotoko is the issue not the money. If I can’t play for Kotoko then I shouldn’t play for Hearts. He asked the court to sentence me to 10-years in jail despite returning their money.”

“I have given you all your money and belongings, so why should I be jailed for 10 years? I don’t owe Kotoko”, he laughed.
