Chairman of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), Kudjo Fianoo has divulged that the Gameweek 20 betPawa Premier League fixture between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko will serve as the President Cup.
The two clubs are scheduled to face-off in the league on Sunday, March 5, 2023 and Kudjoe Fianoo has disclosed that GHALCA has held positive discussions with the leadership of the two clubs and the various stakeholders for the game to serve as this year’s President Cup, a competition played in honor of the sitting President of Ghana.
“The government helped us organize the President Cup last year, and we are waiting for same to happen this year. We went to the World Cup, so the league had to go on break. We have been looking for a date, so we had to turn our attention to the league fixtures because there was no free day due to how the season is packed.”
“Following consultations with the various stakeholders, we have planned to use the Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko Ghana Premier League game as the President Cup this year,” he said on Happy FM.
“This game has already received publicity, and we plan to meet with stakeholders before kickoff.”
“If the game ends in a draw, it will go straight to the penalty shootouts to determine who wins the game. The winner of the match will get Ghc 50,000 and the runner up will get GHC 30,000, which are proposals we will be sending to the teams,” he added.
Kudjo Fianoo also revealed that there are plans to honor former Ghana international Christian Atsu, who lost his life following a deadly earthquake that struck some cities in Turkey and Syria.
“We are all saddened by the demise of Atsu, however, if things go as expected, we will organize a curtain-raiser game for him before the President Cup” he said.
This year’s President Cup will be the 17th edition. The last edition was won by Hearts of Oak after they defeated Asante Kotoko 2-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium in March 2022.
Asante Kotoko have won the trophy the most, winning it on 8 occasions, 3 more than bitterest rivals Hearts of Oak.
