Ghana’s opponent for the final round of the 2023 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations qualifiers revealed

Ghana’s Black Meteors (Male U-23) will face the Democratic Republic (DR) Congo in the final qualifying round of the 2023 TotalEnergies African U-23 Championship (AFCON).

The Black Meteors secured a place in the round after beating Mozambique 4-1 on aggregate. Ghana won the first leg 2-1 in Maputo, before winning the return encounter 2-0 in Accra.

DR Congo on the other hand secured a place in the round after edging Algeria 5-4 on aggregate. The Congoleses won the first leg 4-1 in Kinshasa and lost the return encounter 3-1 in Algeria.

The final qualifying round games will be played in March 2023. Ghana will travel away for the first leg before hosting DR Congo in the second leg.

The winner of the two-legged affair will qualify for the the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be played in Morocco in June 2023.

The final tournament of the U-23 AFCON which will see 8 teams together with host nation Morocco compete will serve as qualifiers for the 2024 Olympic Games to be held in Paris.

The Black Meteors missed out on the 2020 Olympics in Japan after finishing 4th at the U-23 AFCON in Egypt – 2019. Ghana is yet to play at the Olympic Games since 2004 in Greece.
