Former Chelsea and Newcastle United winger Christian Atsu is amongst the victims reportedly trapped after a huge earthquake hit Turkey.

Kahramanmaras, where Christian Atsu’s club outfit Hatayspor is based was hit with a earthquake in the early hours of Monday.

Over 1,000 people are believed to have died in the earthquake and experts say the toll could rise to 10,000 after a second 7.5 magnitude quake hit later on.

Several members of Turkish topflight side Hatayspor have been rescued by specialists after the earthquake struck. But it’s claimed that Atsu and Hatayspor’s sporting director Taner Savut remain missing under rubble.

A search and rescue operation is underway to find the Ghana star and all other persons who might have been trapped in the rubble.

Christian Atsu who’s capped 65 times for the Ghana national team joined Hatayspor last summer on a free.

The 31-year old made only his 2nd league appearance and 3rd appearance in all competitions for the team over the weekend, scoring in the 97th minute to hand them all three points against Kasimpasa.
