Ghana cautioned against emulating Brazil as captaincy debate goes on

General Manager of Great Olympics Oloboi Commodore disagrees with Kwesi Appiah’s assertion that the Black Stars captain’s armband should be rotated among the players to avoid confusion.

As it is widely known that Ghana’s major source of confusion between players in camp is captaincy. The national team’s failure to win a major trophy since 1982 has been attributed to captaincy row by some section of football fans.

Kwesi Appiah, who’s the former skipper and former manager of the Black Stars has experienced the situation as a player and as a manager of the team.

Prior to the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 1992, Kwesi Appiah who was the captain of the team was stripped off the captaincy, Abedi Pele was named as new captain.

As Black Stars manager, kwesi Appiah stripped Asamoah Gyan off the captaincy and named Dede Ayew as new captain just days away from the AFCON in Egypt last year.

Both decisions caused a stir in the country and within the playing body as Ghana in 1992 lost to Côte d’Ivoire 11-10 on penalties and at the 2019 AFCON recorded it worst performance at the competition since 2006.

In bid to solve the persisting problem that has become the major source of confusion in Black Stars camp, Kwesi Appiah has suggested that the national team should emulate Brazil and rotate the captain’s band between players from time to time.

“Sometimes this captaincy issue comes as a result of poor communication from management members or certain people trying to push their own agenda.”

“Looking at our current situation I will propose we rotate the captain’s armband and also a general captain appointed to speak on behalf of the players. Brazil and other countries have made it work so we can also emulate them”, he told Happy FM.

“We should be careful or else this captaincy row can affect the national team for years to come”, he concluded.

Reacting to Kwesi Appiah’s comments, General Manager of Great Olympics Oloboi Commodore has cautioned against emulating Brazil by rotating the Black Stars captain’s armband.

“I disagree with Kwesi Appiah to say that our Black Stars captaincy should be rotated,” Commodore stated on Wontumi Radio.

“Let’s take Portugal as example, will they allow someone to captain the team ahead of [Cristiano] Ronaldo? If Brazil are doing that then it’s a bad practice and we should not emulate that.”

“André is a cup winning captain, he has won a trophy for the country and that alone gives him the mark but as for the national team let’s see whether he could be a good captain too”, he concluded.
