Karela United defeated Great Olympics on penalty shootouts after a scoreless game to secure a place in the semifinal of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) Top Six (6).
Great Olympics came into the game trying to turn things around after losing their first game of the competition to Bechem United on penalty shootouts.
The Dade Boys stamped their authority on the game in the first half, creating the best chances of the half but failing to take them. Prince Afrifa struck the post from free-kick and Sando Varney missed two good opportunities.
The second half of the game continued just like first, Great Olympics continued to great chances but failed to take any. Skipper Jamaldeen Haruna nearly made the difference with a pile driver, but his effort from way out struck the post as the game ended 0-0.
As part of the regulations for the competition, penalty shootouts was needed to separate the two sides. Karela United won the shootouts 6-5, Prince Afrifa the only player to miss his kick.
The result means Karela United join Bechem United as the two teams to advance to the semifinal from Group A.
The competition will continue tomorrow, giants Hearts of Oak will come up against Medeama at 3:00 pm.
