The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has made contact with Ghanaian players in Turkey and Syria over their safety following an earthquake.
Powerful earthquakes have sent multistorey buildings crumbling to the ground in parts of Turkey and Syria, killing more than 2,000 people as rescue operations continue.

Amidst the troubling situation, the Ghana FA has has released a statement stipulating that it has been contacting all Ghanaian footballers within the two countries to ensure their safety.
“National Teams Department of the GFA has been contacting all Ghanaian footballers within Turkey and Syria to ensure their safety in this difficult moment,” wrote the FA on social media.
“We will continue to liaise with all authorities and NGOs as we remain hopeful for positive news on all of them”.

Per a report from Al Jazeera, Turkish authorities has confirmed 1,541 deaths, with another 810 reported in Syria, while 1,000s remain missing. Amongst them is Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu who plies his trade with Turkish topflight side Hatayspor.

“We pray for Ghana International Christian Atsu and victims of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria,” said a statement by the Ghana FA.
“We continue with our efforts to establish contact with officials of Hataspor and the Turkish Football Federation, considering the difficult situation.”
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Christian Atsu and our brothers and sisters in Turkey and Syria. We remain hopeful for positive news,” the statement ended.

Christian Atsu who’s capped 65 times for the Ghana national team joined Hatayspor last summer on a free.
The 31-year old made only his second league appearance for the team over the weekend and scored in the 97th minute in a 1-0 win against Kasimpasa.
