Fatawu Issahaku makes Champions League debut; Lomotey and Sowah see red: Performance of Ghanaian players in European competitions

The fourth round of games for the Group stages of the 2022/23 UEFA Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League were played across Europe from Tuesday to Thursday.

A lot of Ghanaian players were involved with their various clubs in the three competitions.

UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Mohammed Kudus played 65 minutes for Ajax in a 4-2 away defeat to Napoli.

Kamal Sowah was sent off as Club Brugge played a scoreless draw against Atletico Madrid and in the process secured a place in the knockout for the first time in their history. Denis Odoi also featured for Club Brugge.

Abdul Fatawu Issahaku made his Champions League debut for Sporting Lisbon in a 2-0 home defeat to Olympique de Marseille.

UEFA Europa League

Thomas Partey played 5 minutes for Arsenal in their 1-0 victory against Bødo/Glimt.

Kamaldeen Sulemana came on in the 66th minute for Stade Rennais as they defeated Dynamo Kiev 1-0.

Bernard Tekpetey provided an assist for Ludogorets Razgrad in their 2-0 victory against Helsinki. Malik Abubakar didn’t make the bench for Helsinki.

Emmanuel Lomotey came from the bench and saw red as Malmo lost 1-0 to Union Berlin.

Patrick Kpozo and Mudasiru Salifu featured for Sheriff Tiraspol in a 3-0 defeat to Real Sociedad. Razak Abalora didn’t make the match day squad.

Kwabena Owusu saw 85 minutes of action for Qarabag in their scoreless draw against Olympiacos.

Daniel-Kofi Kyereh didn’t make Freiburg’s match-day in their 4-0 victory against Nantes.

Osman Bukari returned from injury and came on in the 60th minute for Red Star Belgrade in a 2-1 defeat to Ferencváros. Ibrahim Mustafa was an unused sub.

Europa Conference League

Alfred Duncan lasted 45 minutes on the field for Fiorentina in a 5-1 victory against Hearts of Midlothian.

Majeed Ashimeru didn’t feature for RSC Anderlecht in their 2-1 away defeat to West Ham United.

Eugene Ansah came on in the 59th minute for Hapoel Be’er Sheva in a 1-1 draw against Lech Poznan.

Elisha Owusu played 90 minutes for Gent in a 4-2 defeat to Djurgardens.

Emmanuel Yeboah and Nana Boateng featured for CFR Cluj in their 2-0 victory against Sivasspor.

Kasim Adams didn’t feature for FC Basel in their 3-3 draw against Slovan Bratislava. The defender was out due to suspension.

Francis Kyeremeh played 83 minutes for Zalgiris in a 2-1 victory against Pyunik Yerevan.
