Erik ten Hag explores Kudus Mohammed’s versatility

It is no herculean task for anyone to notice how talented or how good Kudus Mohammed is. Even on a bad day, the youngster’s footballing abilities are glaring.

What is arduous to notice about the erstwhile Right to Dream graduate is his favorite position, not even Flemming Pedersen who managed him for two seasons at Nordsjælland can give an explicit answer on where Kudus’ favorite position is.

Kudus, who joined Ajax in July for €9m from Nordsjælland can excellently play in a variety of positions. There’s even a school of thought that he can play as a goalkeeper when called upon. An attribute Erik ten Hag will like to take full advantage of.

With the departure of Hakim Ziyech to Chelsea and Donny van de Beek to Manchester United, there’s a believe amongst football faithfuls that Kudus will be the direct replacement for either of the two.

But Erik ten Hag, who’s preparing his team for the 2020/21 football season is yet to decide on that. The Ajax manager has taken full advantage of preseason games to explore Kudus Mohammed’s versatility.

The Dutch manager in the preseason games has deployed the 2020 Golden boy nominee in central midfield, attacking midfield, on the wings and as a false 9, with the youngster excelling in all positions.

Even so, Erik ten Hag has more plans on where to deploy Kudus Mohammed, he has a surprise plan of using him as a left back or left fullback when Nicolás Tagliafico departs the club this summer.

“The backs are now game distributors, Mohammed Kudus could handle that role,” said Ten Hag.

However, Kudus in a recent interview with Ajax TV noted that playing as a number 10 is his preferred position, but looks like his say will have little or no effect on the manager’s plan for him.

Where Erik ten Hag will deploy Kudus is surely a thing for everyone to keep an eye on as Ajax commence their Eredivisie title defense this weekend when they travel to the Het Kasteel stadium to play Sparta Rotterdam.
