Chairman of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), Kudjo Fianoo has explained why Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko have been selected to play in the 2022 President Cup.

GHALCA on Tuesday announced that Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko will face-off in the President Cup on Friday, March 4, 2022 at the Accra Sports Stadium at 6:00 pm.

The game will be the second time the sworn enemies will meet this season following Sunday’s scoreless draw, before another meeting in April in the second leg of the Premier League.

Explaining why the two clubs have been selected to honor the game, Chairman of GHALCA, Kudjo Fianoo revealed that the purpose of the game is to raise funds for the Association to execute their programs and as well honor the President, hence, they needed a fixture that can pull the crowd.

“We play these matches to raise funds for the Association to execute our programs and in honoring the President, you need a fixture that can pull the crowd.”

“Again, getting this thing together at this very short notice was not easy. And as we are all aware, we haven’t had this for the past three years now so the argument of why Hearts and Kotoko shouldn’t come in,” Kudjo Fianoo told Kumasi-based Akoma FM.

The President Cup which is played in honor of the sitting president of Ghana returns after two years absence.

The last edition was won by Asante Kotoko after they came from a goal down to beat Hearts of Oak 2-1 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in December 2019.

Asante Kotoko have won the trophy the most, winning it on 6 occasions, 2 more than bitterest rivals Hearts of Oak.
