CAF announce date for 2023 U-23 AFCON qualifiers draw; Ghana exempted from first round

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that the draw for the qualifiers of the TotalEnergies U23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Morocco 2023 will take place on Thursday 18 August 2022 at 11:00 GMT.

The U23 AFCON is scheduled to take place in Morocco in June 2023. The competition will serve as qualifiers for the 2024 Summer Olympics to take place in Paris.

39 countries will participate in the AFCON qualifiers. Morocco are automatically qualified as hosts and will be joined by 7 other countries for the tournament next year.

Ghana together with 17 other countries have been exempted from participating in the first round of the qualifiers for the AFCON.

The other countries are Algeria, Egypt, Tunisia, Guinea, Mali, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Sudan, Uganda, Cameroon, Congo, Gabon, South Africa and Zambia.

20 least ranked countries will be involved in the first round, with the 10 teams qualified from the round joining the 18 teams exempted from the 1st round in a knockout phase to produce 14 qualified teams who would move to the next round.

The 14 teams qualified from the 2nd round will play the 3rd round (knock out from home & away matches), with the winners securing a place at next year’s AFCON.

The first round of the qualifiers are scheduled for September, 19 to 27. The second round October 21 to 30 and the third round March, 20 to 28, 2023.
