Head coach of the national team C.K Akonnor has revealed why the national team hasn’t won the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) or a major trophy since 1982.
It’s been almost 4 decades since the Black Stars last won the AFCON. The last time they did so was in Libya 1982. Since then the Black Stars have made it to 3 finals (1992, 2010, 2015) and lost all 3 finals.
The situation is troubling most football followers in the country and has recently become a major talking point. Some section believe it is a curse, some also believe it is due to football politics etc. but C.K Akonnor who was once the captain of the team revealed it is due to inadequate preparation for the tournaments.
“I strongly believe that if you do prepare very well before carrying it on the field of play, you’re likely to be successful, 60% you can get it, the rest can be done by the players and everybody else”, Akonnor told Joy Sports.
“But we don’t really prepare well, every time there’s been issues. We are a strong nation, a football nation, within this period that we have not won the AFCON, we’ve been to the final like two or three times”, he noted.
C.K went on to add that Ghana is not far from tasting glory.
“So we are not far from there, we need to prepare before we take it to the field of play”, he concluded.
