Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum has disclosed that the Black Stars players received $20,000 as an appearance fee at the just ended Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon.

The Black Stars at the competition endured their worst display in the history of the AFCON. Ghana were knocked out of the group stages of the tournament with a point.

The team lost 1-0 to Morocco in the first group game, threw an early lead to draw 1-1 against Gabon in the second game and lost 3-2 to minnows Comoros in the final group game.

Speaking in an interview with Starr FM, Henry Asante Twum disclosed that the players did not receive any winning bonus since they failed to win any of their group games and were only paid for their appearance at the competition.

“Black Stars players didn’t get any bonus because they didn’t win a game but they got $20,000 each as appearance fee. Other countries paid more. Gabon took $60,000,” he told Starr FM.

The team’s disappointing performance led to the sacking of Head Coach Milovan Rajevac and the dissolving of the Technical team and Management Commitee of the team.

The Ghana FA is currently in hunt for a new coach. Per reports, Chris Hughton is likely to be named new head coach and he will lead the team in the playoff of the 2022 FIFA World Cup against Nigeria in March.
