Ghana’s senior women’s national team, the Black Queens drew 1-1 with Avenor-based colts team Avenor Stars FC in a friendly match at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The first 45 minutes of the game produced no goals but wasn’t short of excitement. Both teams created some good opportunities but the two goalkeepers were at their best to keep the score barren.

Before the start of the second half, Coach Nora Häuptle made changes to the Black Queens team, subbing off the entire eleven.

In the 60th minute, Avenor Stars scored the opening goal of the game, Kelvin Fumado arrived late at the edge of the box to strike a low shot pass the goalkeeper.

The Black Queens stepped their game up and grabbed the equalizer in the 70th minute. Jaqueline Opoku headed home from close range to ensure that the game ended 1-1.

The friendly against the fast rising juvenile side forms part of the Black Queen’s’ preparations for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games Qualifiers against Guinea.

Ghana will first travel to Conakry for the first leg scheduled for Saturday, July 15, before hosting their counterparts a week later in Accra.

Should the Black Queens go past Guinea, they’ll face one of Guinea Bissau and Benin in the second round of the qualifiers between 23–31 October 2023.
