Black Meteors intensify AFCON preparations with friendly win against Uncle T

The Black Meteors (U-23) continued preparations for the U-23 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a 3-0 friendly win against Access Division One side Uncle T at the Ghanaman Soccer Center of Excellence in Prampram.

Ghana went into the halftime break with a 2-0 lead. Daniel Afriyie Barnieh opened the scoring from a spot-kick in the 20th minute, before Godwin Bentil made it 2-0 later own with a finish from close range.

The Black Meteors rounded the game off in the opening minutes of the second half, Godwin Bentil tapped home to grab his brace and his team’s third.

The likes of Goalkeeper Jordan Amissah, Emmanuel Essiam, Samuel Ashie-Quaye, Zubairu Ibrahim, Maxwell Woledzi, Sylvester Simba, Dominic Nsobila, Godfred Poku Wakii and so on featured in the game.

The friendly game was arranged to ensure that the team is in good shape for the U-23 AFCON to be played in Morocco from Saturday, June 24 to Saturday, July 8, 2023.

Ghana is paired with host Morocco, Guinea and Congo in Group A of the competition which will serve as qualifiers for the next Olympics in Paris, France.

The Black Meteors will kickoff their campaign against Congo on Saturday, June 24, before playing Morocco on Tuesday, June 27 and then Guinea on Friday, June 30.

The top three teams from the competition will automatically qualify to the Olympics, while the 4th-placed team will play against a team from Asia in a playoffs to decide the final slot at the Olympics.

Ghana missed out on the 2020 Olympics in Japan after finishing 4th at the U-23 AFCON in Egypt – 2019. The Black Meteors are yet to play at the Olympic Games since 2004 in Greece.
