Black Galaxies boss Annor Walker names captains for the Algeria CHAN tournament

Head coach of the Black Galaxies Annor Walker has named experienced midfielder Gladson Awako as the substantive captain of the team.

The Hearts of Oak midfielder captained the team in the qualifiers for the Championship of African Nations (CHAN) Algeria 2023 tournament and will maintain his position.

Awako be assisted by erstwhile skipper of the Black Satellites (U-20) Daniel Afriyie Barnieh as 1st vice-captain and Real Tamale United (RTU) midfielder David Sandan Abagna as 2nd vice-captain.

Coach Annor Walker and his technical team announced these appointments at a brief team meeting held at the team’s base camp in Cairo on Sunday, December 24.

The Black Galaxies arrived in Egypt on Saturday, December 24 to intensify their preparations for the CHAN tournament which is scheduled for Friday, January 13 to Saturday, February 4, 2023 in Algeria.

The team will commence intensive training in Cairo on Monday, December 26 and will play some high profile friendly games during their stay in the Northern Africa country.

Ghana is pitted in Group C alongside Madagascar, Sudan and Morocco for the group stages of the biennial competition.

The Black Galaxies will kick start their campaign against Madagascar on Sunday, January 15, before playing Sudan on Thursday, January 19 and then Morocco on Monday, January 23.

The newly announced leadership of the players are expected to leave prints of their leadership qualities on the team that is seeking to win the CHAN for the first time after losing in the finals of the 2009 and 2014 editions.
