Red Bull Salzburg midfield Majeed Ashimeru will miss Ghana’s African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Sudan.
The Black Stars will return to competitive action on Thursday, November 12 in a AFCON qualifier against Sudan at the Cape Coast stadium, before travelling to Khartoum to face the Falcons five days later in the reverse fixture.
Majeed Ashimeru, who was initially left of the 23-man squad by CK Akonnor was handed a late call-up for the aforementioned games.
Nevertheless, Red Bull Salzburg have announced that the midfielder will not be able to join the national team after six of their players tested positive for Covid-19.
The statement on the club’s website read: “A corona test for the Bundesliga game against SK Rapid Wien evaluated on Friday had negative results for all FC Red Bull Salzburg players.
“Another test, which was only compulsory for the team players called up from this week and the result of which was communicated to the club on Sunday evening, showed a changed picture. This additional test for this group gave six positive results.
“In accordance with the prevention concept agreed with the authorities, the office of the Austrian Football League, the Austrian Football Association and the responsible health authority were informed immediately.
“The affected players are currently without symptoms and have already gone into quarantine. The rest of the team is in team quarantine and is only allowed to commute between home, training or match location.
“In addition, all national teams were canceled for the time being.
“In order to get to the bottom of the different test results within such a short period of time and to generally obtain the greatest possible clarity about the degree of infection of the players, a third series of PCR tests is being carried out on the entire team today. This can result in possible changes in the procedure, which, however, will ultimately be made by the authorities,” the statement concluded.
Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey and Real Mallorca’s Baba Iddrisu are also likely to miss the game with injuries, whiles reports suggest Bechem United youngster Prince Adu Kwabena, Clifford Aboagye and Afriyie Acquah have been handed late call-ups:
The Ghana Football Association is expected to announce all new developments to the general public soon.
