It was nightmare for Ghanaian duo Bernard Mensah and Afriyie Acquah in the Turkish Süper Lig as they suffered relegation with respective clubs.
For most top flight clubs, the 2019/2020 Turkey Süper Lig season ended on Saturday. Istanbul Basaksehir were crowned champions for the first time in their history, but it was agony for Bernard Mensah and Afriyie Acquah as they found themselves at the wrong end of the table.
Bernard Mensah and Kayserispor finished bottom of the league with 32 points and -32 goal difference. Bernard Mensah who joined the club from Atlético Madrid last summer was fantastic for the team this season, scoring 5 goals and providing 8 assists, but his returns wasn’t enough to keep his team in the league.
Tenacious midfielder Afriyie Acquah also suffered relegation with Yeni Malatyaspor. Relegation was confirmed for Afriyie Acquah and Yeni Malatyaspor after they lost 1-0 at home to Patrick Twumasi, Raman Chibsah and Abdul Aziz Tetteh’s Gaziantep.
The 1-0 defeat meant that Yeni Malatyaspor were demoted to Turkey’s Division One league. They finished 16th on the league table with 32 points and -7 goal difference. Ankaragücü was the other relegated side.
It was joy though for Issac Sackey and Denizlispor as they secured the ticket to play in the Turkey Süper Lig for another season despite losing 1-0 at home on the final day to relegated Ankaragücü. They finished 14th with 3 points more than 16th placed Yeni Malatyaspor.
For other Ghanaians in the Turkish top flight league, Caleb Ekuban will be playing in the Uefa Champions league next season after his side Trabzonspor finished second.
Kevin-Prince Boateng finished 3rd with Besiktas. Boateng will however be returning to his parent club Fiorentina after Besiktas failed to renew his loan contract.
Issac Coffie secured Europa league place after finishing 4th with Sivasspor. Patrick Twumasi, Raman Chibsah and Abdul Aziz Tetteh finished 8th with Gaziantep.
