The first qualifying round of the Uefa Champions League commenced on Tuesday, 18 August. 17 games took place across the various match centers.
5 Ghanaian players were involved, with 4 of them enjoying success with their respective clubs.

1. Kwabena Owusu (Qarabag)
Kwabena Owusu’s Qarabag defeated Macedonian side Sileks Kratovo 4-0 to advance to the stage of the qualifying round. Two goals from Wilde-Donald Guerrier, a goal each from Jaime Romero and Mahir Emreli ensured the victory.
Owusu started the game on the bench, but came on in the 72nd minute to help his side see the game through.
2. Richmond Boakye-Yiadom (Red Star Belgrade)
A hat trick from El Fardou Ben and a brace from Mirko Ivanic ensured that Serbian champions Red Star Belgrade defeated Gibraltar side Europa FC by 5-0 and in the process progressed to the next round of the qualifiers.
Richmond Boakye-Yiadom watched the entire game from the bench.
3. Bismark Adjei-Boateng (KuPS)
Bismark Adjei-Boateng was the only Ghanaian player to suffer defeat in the first qualifying round of this season’s Uefa Champions league. His side KuPS lost 5-0 to Molde.
Adjei-Boateng played full throttle for KuPS but his efforts wasn’t enough to earn his side a place in the next round.
4. Winful Cobinnah (KF Tirana)
It was another success for coach Ndubuisi Egbo and his side, KF Tirana defeated Dinamo Tbilisi 2-0 to book a place in the next round. Agustin Torassa and Marsel Ismajlgeci grabbed the goals for the Albanian Champions.
Winful Cobinnah lasted the entire duration for KF Tirana. Compatriots Derrick Sasraku, Isaac Gyamfi and Ibrahim Sulley will join the team later and are expected to play a big part in the qualifiers.
5. Bernard Tekpetey (Ludogorets)
Ludogorets also defeated Montenegro side Budućnost Podgorica 3-1 to seal a place in the next round. Higinio, Mavis Tchibota and Cauly Oliveira scored the goals for the Bulgarian champions, with Igor Cukovic grabbing the consolation goal.
Bernard Tekpetey started for the first time since he joined from Schalke 04 weeks ago, he lasted 85 minutes on the pitch.
Lyon’s 3-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in the semifinal of the Uefa Champions League also meant that Ajax and Kudus Mohammed have sealed a place in the group stage of the 2020/21 Champions league.
