Daniel Afriyie Barnieh scored twice to propel the Black Meteors to a 2-1 victory against Mozambique in the first leg of the TotalEnergies African U23 Championship (AFCON) qualifier at the Estadio Nacional do Zimpeto.
The first half of the game ended scoreless. Ghana dominated the half and created the best chances, but they were denied by a combination of good defending and goalkeeping.
At the start of the second half, Mozambique came close to breaking the deadlock but goalkeeper Ibrahim Danlad was alert to avert the danger.
In 63rd minute, Ghana broke the deadlock. Daniel Afriyie gave his side the lead through a spot kick.
The Black Meteors continued to probe and doubled their lead in the 75th minute through another spot kick converted by Daniel Afriyie.
Later in the game, Mozambique pulled a goal back to give themselves hope of a comeback but Ghana stayed resilient to win 2-1.
The 2-1 victory gives the Black Meteors the advantage going into the second leg on Sunday, October 30 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
