2023 U-23 AFCON: Why Emmanuel Yeboah missed out on the golden boot despite scoring same goals as Abdessamad Ezzalzouli

Morocco and Barcelona forward Abdessamad Ezzalzouli was named the top scorer of the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) TotalEnergies 2023.

Abdessamad Ezzalzouli finished the competition with 3 goals in 5 appearances, claiming the Umbro Golden Boot award for the competition.

The Barcelona striker who spent last season on loan at Osasuna finished the competition with the same number of goals as teammate Yanis Begraoui and Ghana’s Emmanuel Yeboah who both played lesser minutes.

Inspite of the situation, Abdessamad Ezzalzouli was outrightly named top scorer of the competition using the tie-breaker system. The tie-breaker system stipulates that if two or more players end the competition with the same number of goals, the player with more assists wins the award.

Abdessamad Ezzalzouli aside his 3 goals provided 3 assists, with one those assists coming in the 2-1 win against Egypt in the final. The Moroccan skipper provided 2 more assists than any of his 2 competitors.

Meanwhile, Ibrahim Adel, the captain of the Egypt team was named the tournament’s best player. Ibrahim Adel was a joy to watch throughout the campaign, guiding his team to the final.

Egypt’s Hamza Alaa, who remained unbeatable in goal until the final where he conceded two goals, received the award for the best goalkeeper.

Fourth placed finishers Guinea was honoured with the Fair Play Award for their sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
