2023 U-23 AFCON: Ghana bow out after failing to beat Guinea

Ghana bowed out of the TotalEnergies U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after drawing 1-1 with Guinea in the final group game at the Grand Stade of Tangier.

The early stages of the game saw both teams evenly matched, but it was Ghana who broke the deadlock after 33 minutes, Emmanuel Yeboah finished off a smart play with Fatawu Issahaku.

Heading into the final minutes of the first half, Ghana were denied a second by a smart stop from Mory Keita, keep out a low volley from Hafiz Ibrahim.

Guinea returned from the break with added impetus and came close to scoring in the 54th minute. A header from Mohamed Lamine Soumah struck the post.

The Guineans continued to controlled the game and leveled the score in the 64th minute. Ibrahim Breze Fofana hammered in a loose ball from the edge of the box to make it 1-1.

In the remaining minutes of the game, Ghana pushed for the winning goal but Guinea held on to draw 1-1 and secure a place in the knockout round of the competition.

The situation means Ghana will not feature at the 2024 Olympics games in Paris.

In the other game, Egypt defeat Congo 1-0 and as well secure a place in the knockout round as table toppers of Group A.
