2023 U-23 AFCON: Emmanuel Yeboah jumps off the bench to inspire Ghana to nervy win against Congo

An exceptional second half which produced 5 goals saw Ghana to beat Congo 3-2 in their opening game of the TotalEnergies U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

Coach Tanko handed a starting spot for Ibrahim Danlad in goal, Terry Yebge and Daniel Oppong were paired in defense, while Daniel Afriyie Barnieh started upfront with Ernest Nuamah and Abdul Fatawu Issahaku.

The first half of the game ended scoreless, Ghana controlled the opening minutes of the game but Congo bounced back stronger to cause the Ghana defense problems in the final minutes of the half.

Ibrahim Tanko at the start of the second half made changes to the team, bringing on Emmanuel Yeboah and Hafiz Ibrabim on for Afriyie Barnieh and Sylvester Simba.

The changes made affect as Ghana opened the scoring 5 minutes into the half, Ernest Nuamah tapped home from close range a cross from Emmanuel Yeboah.

In the 70th minute, Emmanuel Yeboah doubled Ghana’s lead with a fine finish, before scoring again in the 83rd minute from a spot-kick to make it 3-0.

Later in the game, Congo scored two quick goals to reduce the deficit to 3-2 and give the game frenzy finish. Ghana won the game 3-2 to top of Group A after the first round of the group games.

The Black Stars will return to action on Tuesday, June 27 against Host nation Morocco at the same venue.
