Ghana’s local national team, the Black Galaxies defeated Benin 1-0 at the Stade de l’Amitié in Porto Novo to advance to the second and final qualifying round of the 2023 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers.
The Black Galaxies after winning the first leg 3-0 in Cape Coast a week ago came into this game with the slight advantage, needing to avoid losing by more than 3 goals margin to advance.
The first half of the game saw no goals, but Benin were slightly the better side, seeing more of the ball but failing to create an opportunity.
The second half continued just like the first. Benin continued to push more bodies forward, while Ghana sat back to defend their 3-goal lead from the first leg.
In the 82nd minute, Ghana against the run of play broke the deadlock, Daniel Afriyie tapped the ball into the net after a good work by substitute Umar Bashiru on the left flank.

The remaining minutes of the game saw no goals as Ghana won the game 1-0 and 4-0 on aggregate.
The win sees the Black Galaxies advance to the final round of the qualifiers where they’ll face bitterest rivals Nigeria. The game against Nigeria will be played on August 27 in Ghana and September 3rd in Nigeria.
The winner of the tie will secure a place at the 2023 CHAN tournament to be played in Algeria next year.
