Asante Kotoko were held to a scoreless draw by returnees Heart of Lions under the floodlights of the Baba Yara Stadium.
The first 45 minutes of the game was evenly contested, both teams came close to scoring. Fredrick Asare pulled off a fine save to deny Pong Kwesi in the 30th minute, while Thomas Kwabena Osae denied Asante Kotoko in the 36th minute.
In the second half, Lions thought they had scored what could have been the game’s only goal when Mustapha Yakubu hammered a rebound into the roof of the net in the 65th minute. However, the goal was wrongly ruled out for offside.
Legon Cities came from a goal down to beat Karela United 2-1 at the El-Wak Stadium. Kharim Abdul Ayeh opened the scoring for Karela in the final minutes of the first half. Francis Antwi scored twice in the second half to turn the game around.
Berekum Chelsea scored two goals in the second half to beat Bibiani GoldStars 2-0 at the Golden City Park. Stephen Amankona scored the two goals in the second half.
Michael Ephson’s 39th minute goal earned Samartex 1996 a 1-0 win against last season’s runners up, Aduana FC at the Nsenkyire Sports Arena in Samreboi.
Newboys boys Abdul Manaf Umar and Eric Osei Bonsu scored in either half to earn Nsoatreman a 2-0 win against Bechem United in Nsuatre.

In other results, Great Olympics and Bofoakwa Tano drew barren at the Accra Sports Stadium.
A 93rd minute Owusu Afriyie header from a corner-kick handed Real Tamale United a 1-0 win against Hearts of Oak in Tamale.

The opening week will be completed on Wednesday, September 20 when Dreams FC host entrants Nations FC at the Theatre of Dreams in Dawu and Medeama host Accra Lions.
