2022 World Cup: No Mane no problem as Senegal progress, Netherlands cruise pass Qatar to stay top: Group A wrap-up

Senegal recorded a historic 2-1 victory against Ecuador to seal a place in the Round of 16 of the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

Ecuador came into the game in pole position to qualify, needing just a point, while Senegal needed nothing short of a win.

The Teranga Lions had a fast start to the game and should have taken the lead in the opening 20 minutes. Iddrisa Gueye and Boulaye Dia squandered 2 good opportunities from inside the 18-yard box.

Senegal continued to dominate the game and had a breakthrough with just a minute of regular time left to the break, Ismaila Sarr scored from a spot-kick he earned himself.

Ecuador returned from the interval a much improved side. The South Americans pilled pressure on Senegal and were rewarded with the equalizer in the 67th minute, Moisés Caicedo was at the right place to tap in a header from Félix Torres.

However, their jubilation was cut short when Senegal regained the lead two minutes later through skipper Kalidou Koulibaly who showed composure to hammer in a loose ball from a free-kick.

Despite late pressure from Ecuador, Senegal held on to win 2-1 and secure a place in the knockout round only for the second time in their history.

In the other game, Netherlands defeated host nation Qatar 2-0 to top the Group.

Netherlands after a strong start struck the opener in the 26th minute, Cody Gakpo after receiving a pass from Davy Klaasen drove into the box, before finding the bottom corner to make it 3 goals from 3 game for himself in the tourney.

The Dutch doubled their lead and killed the game in the opening minutes of the second half, Frankie De Jong was at the right place to tap in a rebound after a save by Meshaal Barsham.

The results ensured that Netherlands and Senegal are through to the Round of 16 and will face the winners and runners up of Group B respectively.
