2022 CHAN: Spirited Black Galaxies rally from behind to beat Sudan and progress into the Quarterfinals

Ghana came from a goal down to beat Sudan 3-1 and progress into the Quarter Finals of the 2022 Championship of African Nations (CHAN).

The Black Galaxies headed into the game in dire need of maximum points after losing their first game 2-1 to Madagascar on Sunday.

Ghana had the better start to the game but it was Sudan who had the first big chance of the evening, Mohamed Abdel Raman in a one on one situation failed to hit the target, striking the post with his effort.

Sudan started to grow into the game and opened the scoring in the 31st minute, Al-gozoli Nooh finished off a good team move to make it 1-0.

The Black Galaxies from then stepped their game up and were awarded the equalizer in the dying embers of the first half. Center-back Konadu Yiadom reacted the quickest to tap a loose ball into the net.

Ghana at the start of the second half continued from where they left off in final minutes of the first half but failed to take the chances that came their way, Jonah Attuquaye and Daniel Afriyie all coming close.

In the 63rd minute, the Black Galaxies were awarded a penalty after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervention. Skipper Daniel Afriyie stepped up and converted the kick, 2-1.

The Black Galaxies continued to create chances and thought they had scored the 3rd when Daniel Afriyie connected with a crossing from close range. However, the goal was disallowed for offside.

In additional time, Ghana was reduced to 10-man, skipper Daniel Afriyie was sent off for a reckless challenge on his opponent.

Despite being a man down, Ghana rounded the game with well taken third scored by substitute Suraj Seidu.

Having been awarded 3 points and 3 goals for Morocco’s failure to honor the competition, the 3-1 win confirms Ghana’s place in the final eight of the competition with 6 points and +3 goals.
