Host nation Cameroon secured bronze at the 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) after coming from 3 goals down to draw 3-3 against Burkina Faso and eventually win 5-3 on penalty shootouts.

After soaking earlier pressure from Cameroon, Burkina Faso against all odds broke the deadlock in the 24th minute through Steeve Yago after combining perfectly with Issa Kaboré.

The Stallions made it 2-0 with some few minutes to the break, Andre Onana clumsily pushed a crossing from Issa Kaboré into his own net.

At the start of the second half, Cameroon brought on Nicolas Moumie Ngamaleu and tournament’s top scorer, Vincent Aboubakar for Ignatius Ganago and Samuel Oum Gouet

Despite the changes, Burkina Faso compounded Cameroon’s miseries by scoring the 3rd. Djibril Ouattara headed in a precise crossing from Bertrand Traoré.

Cameroon didn’t give up and grabbed a consolation in 71st minute, Stephane Bahoken fired the ball into the net from close range after a goalmouth scramble.

Talisman Vincent Aboubakar took advantage of two blunders from young goalkeeper Soufian Ouédraogo to score in the 85th and 87th minute to make sure the game went into penalty shootouts.

In the shootouts, Cameroon converted all five of their kicks and Andre Onana stopped Ibrahim Touré’s kick. Cameroon won the shootouts 5-3 and in the process secured bronze.
