2021/22 MTN FA Cup: Hearts of Oak rally from behind to beat Bechem United and win historic 12th FA Cup trophy

Accra Hearts of Oak rallied from behind to beat Bechem United 2-1 and in the process win the MTN FA Cup for the second consecutive time and for the 12th time in their history.

Bechem United had a good start to the game and came close to scoring in the 7th minute but they were denied twice by Richard Ayi through efforts from Paul Kwei Junior and Augustine Okrah.

The Phobians stepped their game up but were poor in the final third. In the 44th minute, Bechem United took advantage of one of those poor decisions and launched a counter attack which resulted in a goal, Emmanuel Avornyo reacted the quickest to tap a rebound from a Augustine Okrah shot into the net.

Just seconds into the break, Hearts of Oak leveled the score through Caleb Amankwah, scoring a goal that would go down as one of the best goals in the history of the MTN FA Cup.

After the break, Bechem United came out the better side but were caught on a counter in the 60th minute, Daniel Afriyie lobbed a cross from Gladson Awako over the helpless goalkeeper Abdullahi Iddrisu, 2-1.

In the 68th minute, Bechem United were reduced to 10 men after talisman Augustine Okrah head butted one of the Assistant Referees.

The remaining minutes of the game saw no goals as Hearts of Oak held on to win 2-1 and win their 12th MTN FA Cup trophy.

For winning the trophy, Hearts of Oak have secured a place in next season’s CAF Confederations Cup. The Phobians will also face rivals Asante Kotoko in the Super Cup on September 4, 2022.
